Paving in the Lowndes County Seat

Asphalt paving in Hayneville means working on Black Belt clay. Hayneville, the Lowndes County seat at about 230 feet, was founded in 1820 by settlers from South Carolina and was known as Big Swamp during the 1820s. In 1831 it became the county seat and was named for Robert Y. Hayne. It had 830 residents in 2020.

Clay and water

The old name says a lot. Low, flat ground with heavy clay holds water. Driveways need a deeper stone base and a clear path for water to drain.

Courthouse square

The Lowndes County courthouse and Courthouse Square are the center of town. Government and church lots need patching, sealing and striping.

History

In August 1965 civil rights worker Jonathan Daniels was killed in Hayneville. The town was first incorporated in 1831, lapsed and was reincorporated in the late 1960s.

Rural drives

Outside town, long gravel drives are common. We regrade, add stone and pave with a crown and supported edges.

Cost guide

Published national ranges put new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide), seal coating at $1 to $2 per square foot and pothole repairs at $100 to $400. Heavy clay adds base work to new driveways. We give you a written number after the site visit.

Edges on clay

On heavy clay, unsupported edges break off first. We compact the base wider than the asphalt and backfill along the sides.

Upkeep

Filling cracks before the wet winter and spring months keeps water out of the clay below.
